Question by Christine W: Do creatures other than people have xx and xy for female and male?

Does a female snail have xx, or a female fish(I know fish change sex from one to the other depending on the species How is this reflected in their genes) , or snake or are there different arrangements of chromosomes in organisms other than our selves? What kind of chromosomes do plants have? Any website recomendations would be very appreciated. I am interested in evolution and biodiversity which is the reason I am asking this and dont know where to find this type of info.

Actually it is very complicated. Among reptiles alone there are considerable differences. XY and XX often don´t enter into it at all - sometimes, gender is determined by something like the temperature at which the eggs gestate.
Slime molds have such a complicated system that they have the equivalent of over 500 of our `genders´.
